Poutama, also known as the Stairway to Heaven, is a significant concept in Māori mythology. It refers to the celestial ascent undertaken by Tāne, one of the children of Ranginui (the sky father) and Papatūānuku (the earth mother).
Tāne climbed to the heavens, his purpose was to retrieve the three baskets of knowledge for the benefit of mankind.
There, Tāne received the following sacred treasures:
- Kete-aronui: This basket held all the knowledge that could benefit humanity.
- Kete-tuauri: Containing knowledge related to rituals, memory, and prayer.
- Kete-tuatea: Carrying knowledge of evil or makutu, which could harm mankind.
In addition to the baskets, Tāne also received two sacred stones called whatukura, which amplified the power of knowledge and bestowed mana upon its teachings. Tane-te-wānanga-ā-rangi—Tāne, the bringer of knowledge from the sky—was entrusted with maintaining order on Earth, ensuring that the wisdom contained within the baskets would benefit all.
We utilise both these models through WHAKAMANA TANGATA.
Whakamana Tangata kaupapa is a pilot programme to designed to strengthen and build the capabilities of people and their resources – within the context of Māori organisations. The programme was created to support Māori entities to strengthen their skills and abilities in order to access pūtea across the funding spectrum – “hei whakakoi i te toki – sharpen the axe”.
We apply “He Poutama” which represents the model or process of scaffolding the knowledge and skills through the levels. We build on your prior knowledge as we tackle the challenge of each step to consolidate and enhance your learning, while we grow in confidence and competence. There are four levels to the poutama that we will guide you through the steps with training.
You will be required to have a legal entity and financials before progressing to the Poutama, but if you are not in a position to advance to the Poutama, we can still assist in getting you started. It does need your commitment and your willingness to work with our dedicated Māori team and SociaLink Advisors.
We will utilise the waka concept to navigate you through these waters to voyage and to get to our destination. These are all concepts you know and frameworks you will relate to.
