With increasing scrutiny of supermarkets and food prices, Tauranga’s story stands out: on average, locals are paying more for groceries than shoppers in other major centres across Aotearoa.
Commissioned by Western Bay of Plenty District Council and developed with input from SociaLink, this report explores how community-led structures deliver meaningful outcomes. It highlights the leadership, insight and collaboration that help anchor organisations thrive, and offers practical reflections for councils supporting communities across the WBOP and Aotearoa.
Community organisations are under pressure from rising demand and shrinking funding. Local results mirror national State of the Sector findings. Two-thirds report increased, more complex needs in housing, mental health and debt, while funding fails to keep pace. Many are using reserves or cutting services, an unsustainable position.
[For the Social and Community Sector in the WBOP]. SociaLink conducted a training and needs assessment with WBOP’s social and community sectors in late 2022. Funded by TCC, the project identified training needs to inform SociaLink’s learning opportunities and provided insight into workforce development issues, enabling SociaLink to take action.
SociaLink has undertaken some research about the impact of increasing inflation on community organisations and communities to help inform SociaLink’s understanding of pressure points and to provide insight to funders. SociaLink collated relevant research and surveyed local not-for-profits to gain insight on the impact of inflation locally.
Listening to consumers of social services is recognised as important to better understand how to improve access. SociaLink has undertaken a project called 'Mapping the Social Sector' which involved talking with social service providers to better understand from their perspective the services they deliver and the challenges they experience.
