What can the Ombudsman do for your organisation?

When a community organisation is working with government agencies, things do not always go smoothly. You may have concerns about a decision, feel you have not been treated fairly, or need information from a government agency.

The Office of the Ombudsman is an independent Officer of Parliament that investigates complaints about New Zealand government departments and agencies. It can help people understand their options, investigate concerns and, where appropriate, seek resolution.

How might this be useful to your organisation?

Here are a few examples:

You are having difficulty getting information from a government agency

Your organisation has requested information under the Official Information Act, perhaps to understand a decision affecting the people you support. The agency refuses your request, provides only some of the information, or you are not satisfied with its response. The Ombudsman may be able to review how your request was handled.

You feel a government agency has treated your organisation unfairly

Your organisation is dealing with a government agency over funding, a service agreement or another matter. You have raised your concerns but do not feel they have been properly considered. The Ombudsman may be able to investigate whether you have been treated fairly.

You are concerned about serious wrongdoing

Someone in your organisation becomes aware of serious wrongdoing and is unsure how to raise their concerns safely. The Ombudsman can receive protected disclosures, sometimes known as whistle-blowing, and provide guidance about the process.

You are advocating for people who are being affected by government decisions

Your organisation is supporting people, tamariki, rangatahi or whānau who have concerns about how a government agency has treated them. Understanding the Ombudsman’s role can help you know what options may be available when concerns cannot be resolved directly with the agency.

Meet the Office of the Ombudsman

The Office of the Ombudsman is visiting the Bay of Plenty in October and is keen to connect with community and social sector organisations.

This information session is particularly relevant to social service organisations and charities, including those holding government contracts. You will learn more about the Ombudsman’s role, how organisations and communities can access its services, and how the Ombudsman may be able to support you when challenges arise with government agencies.

You will also have an opportunity to meet the Ombudsman team, ask questions and make connections.
