Last month, the whānau of Te Pā Harakeke o Tauranga Moana gathered at The Kollective for a hui full of whakawhanaungatanga, shared kai, and kōrero from amazing Māori community organisations. We also celebrated the handover of kaitiaki from Tiana Bennett to SociaLink’s Andrea Jerry Ryan – a moment marking the next chapter for this incredible roopū.

Excellent report which highlights the impact of recent policy changes, including the introduction of sanctions and a traffic light compliance system, tightened emergency housing criteria, and reduced funding for community services. These changes have exacerbated hardship, particularly for those already vulnerable due to low income, disability, health issues, or housing insecurity.

2025 has been a challenging chapter for many individuals, whānau, and communities. In response to a recent Citizens Advice Bureau report, SociaLink CE Liz Davies reflects on the growing number of people struggling to meet basic needs and access the support they are entitled to. Her reflection calls for dignity, understanding, and a collective commitment to supporting people doing it tough, rather than stigmatising them.
