Tauranga City Council and its council-controlled organisations (CCOs) are pleased to announce its inaugural Board Intern programme. This programme aims to increase diversity on our CCO boards and to provide a pipeline of prospective board members.
The potential benefits of the programme include the following:
• securing a larger diverse pool of potential board members to choose from for future appointments to CCO boards opportunity for aspiring board members to make a contribution to the community
• providing board interns with a better understanding of the council group, its processes and public service ethos
• enabling board interns to develop relationships and networks with the chair and other board members
• helping Tauranga’s corporate community by developing potential company directors.
The internship offers emerging directors the opportunity to accelerate their boardroom experience, with participants appointed for a 12-month term, and includes:
• monthly attendance at CCO board meetings and one sub-committee meeting quarterly
• opportunities for networking, participation in board discussion, assisting specific work programmes (e.g. Audit and Risk sub-committee or Remuneration sub-committees)
• attendance at a council meeting, presentation, networking event
• providing one presentation to Council at the end of the internship (annual).
Candidate specifications
The interns need to exhibit a strong commitment, motivation and desire to pursue directorship opportunities and skill requirements include:
• being at a stage in their career where they are looking to develop governance skills and gain board member roles in the next two to three years
• having a range of skills and sector experience which includes community and public service
• being able to commit enough time to undertake the programme effectively
• have an employer’s letter approving participation in the 12-month board intern programme
• reside in Tauranga (or western Bay of Plenty in the case of Tourism BOP)
• exhibit strength of commitment for the board intern role
• provide a signed non-disclosure and conflict of interest declaration
• in line with council requirements all new starters are required to show proof of vaccination as per Government vaccination guidelines.
Other competencies include:
• experience developing strategies and measuring business performance against strategic targets
• strong interpersonal and communication capability with confidence to participate and contribute in a valuable way during interactions and board meetings.
Selection Process
Participation is limited to three internships for three of council’s CCOs being: Bay Venues Limited (BVL), Tauranga Art Gallery Trust (TAGT), Tourism Bay of Plenty (TBOP). Applications are open and will be accepted until 5pm, 11 March 2022.
Once the applications close, the Interview Panel will shortlist those candidates that meet the selection criteria for interview.
