The Government Statistician is responsible for defining a number of concepts and terms under the Child Poverty Reduction Act,\u00a0such as\u00a0material hardship. See this guide for some very helpful explainations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stats.govt.nz\/methods\/measuring-child-poverty-concepts-and-definitions#measures\">https:\/\/www.stats.govt.nz\/methods\/measuring-child-poverty-concepts-and-definitions#measures<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Measuring child poverty: Concepts and definitions<\/em>\u00a0explains the terms used in calculating child poverty measures in New Zealand. Dated23 Feb 2021<\/p>\n<h4>Child Poverty Related Indicators<\/h4>\n<p>The Act requires the Government to report annually on one or more \u2018child poverty related indicators\u2019 or \u2018CPRIs\u2019<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55857\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55857\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-55857\" src=\"https:\/\/socialink.org.nz\/legacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/children-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-55857\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A multi-ethnic group of young children are at a preschool. These are measures related to the broader causes and consequences of child poverty, and\/or outcomes with a clear link to child poverty.<\/p>\n<p>The Government has identified its CPRIs, which are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>housing affordability<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 as measured by the percentage of children and young people (ages 0-17) living in households spending more than 30 percent of their disposable income on housing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>housing quality<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 as measured by the percentage of children and young people (ages 0-17) living in households with a major problem with dampness or mould.<\/li>\n<li><strong>food insecurity<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 as measured by the percentage of children (ages 0-15) living in households reporting food runs out often or sometimes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>regular school attendance<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 as measured by the percentage of children and young people (ages 6-16) who are regularly attending school.<\/li>\n<li><strong>avoidable hospitalisations<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 as measured by the rate of children (ages 0-15) hospitalised for potentially avoidable illnesses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>See this report on these indicators <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/childyouthwellbeing.govt.nz\/resources\/child-poverty-related-indicators-report-20192020\">https:\/\/childyouthwellbeing.govt.nz\/resources\/child-poverty-related-indicators-report-20192020<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet has a Child Wellbeing and Poverty Reduction Group as a business unit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dpmc.govt.nz\/our-business-units\/child-wellbeing-and-poverty-reduction-group\">https:\/\/dpmc.govt.nz\/our-business-units\/child-wellbeing-and-poverty-reduction-group<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is also a Child and Youth Wellbeing website managed by the above group. This includes \u00a0a strategy with six interconnected outcomes reflecting what children and young people said was important to them.
